A surprise that surprised everyone
Some guests come to Linden Airport with a plan. Jonathan C. arrived with a secret: a private flight over the New York City skyline, booked with Captain Renato as a birthday surprise for his girlfriend. What he did not plan for was being just as taken with the evening as she was.
That is a familiar story here. People book the airplane and end up remembering the hospitality. The bottle of red wine on the table. The unhurried conversation before anyone walks out to the ramp. The sense that you are being welcomed rather than processed.
Before the engine starts
Every flight begins on the ground, and Jonathan noticed the difference right away. The safety briefing at Azzurra is thorough because it has to be, but it is delivered like a conversation between friends: how boarding works, what the route looks like, how long you will be in the air, and what would happen in the unlikely event of an emergency. Serious content, relaxed delivery.
Then comes the Piper Cherokee PA-28, a fixed-wing airplane with a high, wide window view and a steady, level ride. Linden sits only minutes from Manhattan, so the skyline arrives almost as soon as you climb out.
In Jonathan's words
What you see up there
Jonathan and his girlfriend are New Yorkers, and they still learned something. That happens often. From the air, the city rearranges itself into something legible: the Statue of Liberty standing alone in the harbor, the financial district stacked at the tip of the island, Midtown's towers catching the last of the light, the bridges stitching the boroughs together. Captain Renato narrates as you go, pointing out the landmarks you have walked past a hundred times without ever seeing from above.
The part after the landing
One detail from Jonathan's review says a lot: they stayed after they deplaned to finish the wine. Nobody rushed them out. That is the intention behind these flights — not a ride, but an evening.
Photos are part of it too, before, during and after, as many as you want. Birthdays, anniversaries, proposals, or no occasion at all: if you have been looking for a reason to see New York from a small airplane, Jonathan has offered a fairly convincing one.
