A birthday spent above the skyline
Some birthdays are marked with cake and candles. Others are marked with an aluminum wing, a headset, and the whole of Manhattan sliding past the window. In January 2022, Awwal A. chose the second kind, boarding a private Piper Cherokee PA-28 at Linden Airport in New Jersey for a flight along one of the most photographed skylines on earth.
January flying over New York has a particular quality. The winter air tends to be clear and settled, the kind of visibility that pushes the horizon out further than seems reasonable. Buildings stand sharp against a pale sky. The rivers take on a slate color. It is, quietly, one of the best seasons to see the city from a small airplane.
What Awwal said
Short, warm, and generous — the kind of note that tells you a day landed exactly where it was meant to. Awwal singled out two things: the pilot and the customer service. Those happen to be the two things we think about most. A skyline is a skyline; it will be beautiful whether or not anyone helps you enjoy it. What changes the day is the person in the left seat pointing out what you are looking at, and the care that surrounds the flight before the propeller ever turns.
Minutes from Manhattan
Linden Airport sits close enough to New York City that the transition from parking lot to airborne feels almost unfairly quick. There is no terminal to navigate, no security line, no gate number. You walk out to the airplane, meet your pilot, get settled into a four-seat Piper Cherokee, and then you are climbing away from New Jersey with the city building up ahead of you.
A fixed-wing airplane makes for a steady, comfortable platform. The high cruise and the gentle turns give you long, uninterrupted looks rather than fleeting glimpses, and the windows are large enough that phone cameras do surprisingly well.
What you see up there
The route reads like a list of things people travel across the world to stand in line for — except you see them all in one continuous sweep. The Statue of Liberty on her small green island, looking both smaller and more striking than you expect from above. The financial district packed tight at the southern tip of Manhattan. The long spine of the island stretching north, midtown towers clustering together, Central Park cut out of the grid like a green rectangle someone drew with a ruler.
Then there are the bridges, the harbor traffic, the Hudson and East Rivers holding the whole shape of the city in place. Passengers often go quiet for the first minute or two. It takes a moment to reconcile the New York you walk through with the New York you look down on.
Come celebrate something
Birthdays, anniversaries, proposals, or a Tuesday that needed rescuing — the flight works for all of them. Awwal's review is a reminder that the occasion matters as much as the view, and that a good day in the air is built from small things: a pilot who takes the time, a team that pays attention, and a skyline that never disappoints.
If you have a date circled on the calendar, the airplane is waiting at Linden. Bring a window seat appetite and a charged phone.
