Velenz's July Flight Over the NYC Skyline From Linden

5-star review from Velenz — Azzurra City Tours

Not everyone who books a small-plane flight over New York City is a natural in the air. Some guests arrive at Linden Airport with a checklist of questions, a slightly nervous laugh, and a quiet hope that the view will be worth it. That was more or less how Velenz V. arrived on a summer day in July 2021 — honest about a discomfort with heights, and curious enough to go anyway.

The part before takeoff

Most of the nerves get resolved on the ground. Linden Airport sits just across the water from Manhattan, a small general-aviation field where there are no crowds, no terminals, and no lines. Guests meet their pilot, walk out to the airplane, and get a straightforward explanation of what the flight will look like: where the airplane goes, what to expect from the sound of the engine, how the turns feel, and what will be visible out of each window.

For Velenz, that briefing did the work that reassurance usually can't.

★★★★★
It was an amazing experience and I'm not one for heights. Renato was super informative and made us feel very at ease. The flight and views were super stunning. I took these photos below, but they don't do justice. I highly recommend Azzurra City Tours to anyone I come across looking for a unique and memorable NYC experience. It's unmatched!

What the skyline looks like from a Cherokee

Our flights are flown in a Piper Cherokee PA-28, a fixed-wing airplane with high windows and a steady, level ride. It is a very different experience from a helicopter — quieter in feel, smoother in the turns, and more like gliding along the shoreline than hovering above it.

Minutes after leaving Linden, the New Jersey waterfront gives way to open water and the first real view: the Statue of Liberty below, small and unmistakable, with Manhattan rising behind her. From there the island unfolds in sequence — the towers of the Financial District, the bridges stitched across the East River, midtown's familiar crowns, and the long green rectangle of Central Park sitting neatly in the middle of it all.

What surprises most guests is the sense of scale. On the ground, New York is a place you look up at. From a few thousand feet, it becomes a single object you can take in all at once, and the geography finally makes sense: how narrow the island really is, how the rivers shape it, how the neighborhoods fit together.

Why the photos never quite work

Velenz said it well — the photos don't do it justice. Almost everyone says some version of this. A phone camera can capture the shapes, but not the depth, the movement, or the way the light changes as the airplane turns and the whole skyline slides across the window. Guests take pictures anyway, and they should. The photos are a souvenir. The memory is the thing.

An open invitation

If heights make you uneasy, you are in good company, and you may be surprised at how quickly that fades once you're settled in and the airplane is level. If heights don't bother you at all, you'll simply spend the flight with your face to the glass.

Either way, the flight departs from Linden Airport in New Jersey, just minutes from Manhattan, on a private airplane with your own pilot. Bring someone you like, bring a camera you don't mind underusing, and go see the city from the one angle most New Yorkers never get.
