A Born-and-Raised New Yorker Sees His City From the Sky

5-star review from Brian R. — Azzurra City Tours

There is a particular kind of pride that comes with being from New York. You know which subway car door opens closest to the stairs. You know the skyline the way you know a family member's face — from below, from the sidewalk, from the window of a bus on the BQE. And then you climb into a small airplane, lift off from a runway in New Jersey, and realize you have been looking at your own city from exactly one angle your entire life.

That was the discovery Brian R. made on a summer afternoon in July 2021, flying out of Linden Airport in a Piper Cherokee PA-28 with his lady beside him.

"I've never seen my city like this before"

★★★★★
This experience has been the highlight of my summer thus far. Born n raised New Yorker and I've never seen my city like this before.. The views from up there are incredible and the pilot makes sure to call out all landmarks so you don't miss a thing.
What can I say about the pilot! ..an absolute professional at his craft, makes you feel right at home and ready to accommodate anything you need to make the experience to your liking. He even went above and beyond to provide a special birthday surprise that was waiting in the hangar for my lady as we arrived.

Top notch service all the way around.

Right after we landed we were already thinking about when to come back! .. addicted to the skies 🤷🏻‍♂️

The birthday surprise waiting in the hangar is the detail we keep coming back to. Brian mentioned it in passing before the flight, and by the time he and his partner arrived, it was there. That is not a feature of the tour — it is just what happens when someone tells us what would make the day matter, and we have the room to make it happen. Private means private. There is no group to keep on schedule, no one else's itinerary to accommodate.

What the sky looks like from a Cherokee

Linden Airport sits only minutes from Manhattan, which means the wonder starts almost immediately after wheels-up. The Cherokee is a high-visibility fixed-wing airplane with a window at every seat, and unlike a helicopter, it cruises steadily and quietly enough to talk over — which is exactly why Brian noticed the narration. Our pilots call out landmarks as they come into view, so you are never guessing at what you are looking at.

The Statue of Liberty comes up out of the harbor smaller and greener than most people expect. The Financial District stacks itself into a wall of glass. Midtown reveals the geometry that street level hides — the way the avenues run like canyons, the way Central Park is a perfect rectangle cut out of the stone. Guests who have lived here for decades tend to go quiet for a moment, then start pointing. That's my block. That's the bridge I take. That's my roof.

Addicted to the skies

Brian's closing line has become something of an inside phrase around the hangar. "Right after we landed we were already thinking about when to come back." It happens more than you would think. People land, unbuckle, stand on the ramp for a while looking back toward the city, and start planning the next one.

If you have lived in New York your whole life, or you are here for a week and want the version of the city that postcards can't quite deliver, a private airplane tour out of Linden is a short drive and a very different afternoon. Tell us if there's an occasion. We'll do what we can with it.
