Some gifts are unwrapped and set aside. Others get talked about for weeks. In January 2025, Mariia gave her husband a pilot lesson with Azzurra City Tours, departing from Linden Airport in New Jersey, just minutes from Manhattan. By her account, it belongs firmly in the second category.

A welcome before the wheels leave the ground

There is a particular kind of nervous excitement that comes with walking onto a small airfield for the first time. The airplane is closer than you expect. The instruments are real. Someone is about to hand you the controls. What makes the difference in those first minutes is not the airplane at all, but the people standing beside it.

That is where Mariia's story begins, and it is the part she returns to first.

★★★★★
My husband recently had the incredible experience of a pilot lesson, and it was absolutely unforgettable! From the moment he arrived, the instructors made him feel welcome and excited about the experience. They were highly professional, patient, and knowledgeable, explaining every detail clearly and ensuring he felt comfortable before taking to the skies.

The flight itself was amazing. He had the opportunity to take control of the aircraft under the instructor's guidance, which was a dream come true for him. The views were breathtaking, and the feeling of being in control of a plane was truly exhilarating.

This lesson was not only educational but also incredibly fun and inspiring. My husband hasn't stopped talking about it since! It's a perfect gift for anyone with a passion for aviation or just looking for a unique adventure. We highly recommend it to others!

Hands on the yoke, city out the window

Our flights are flown in a Piper Cherokee PA-28, a fixed-wing airplane with high, wide windows and side-by-side seating that puts the guest right next to the instructor. On a pilot lesson, that seating arrangement matters. Every input, every callout, every glance at the instruments is shared. When a guest takes the controls under guidance, they are not performing a party trick — they are flying the airplane, with an experienced pilot alongside them the entire time.

Mariia described that moment as a dream come true for her husband, and it is a phrase we hear often. There is nothing quite like the first time an airplane responds to your own hands, especially when the view outside happens to be one of the most photographed skylines on earth.

What the skyline gives you

Leaving Linden, the New York area unfolds quickly. The Manhattan skyline rises across the water, its towers stacked in layers that shift as the airplane turns. The Statue of Liberty stands out below in the harbor, seen from an angle no ferry or observation deck can offer. Bridges, waterways, and the long geometry of the city's grid stretch out in every direction.

From the air, the familiar becomes unfamiliar. Landmarks you have walked past a hundred times reveal how they fit together. Guests often go quiet for a stretch, then start pointing — at their own neighborhood, at a park, at a building they recognize from a different life on the ground.

An invitation

A private airplane tour over New York is a good story on its own. A pilot lesson over New York is something else again: educational, a little thrilling, and, as Mariia put it, inspiring. Whether you have loved aviation since childhood or simply want an experience that does not feel like every other day out, the airplane is waiting at Linden.

We are grateful to Mariia for sharing her husband's flight with us, and glad he hasn't stopped talking about it. That, honestly, is the goal.
