A January morning, a small airplane, and a very big city
There is something clarifying about winter air over New York. The haze that softens the skyline in August burns off, the light comes in low and sharp, and the whole city seems to sit closer to the surface of the water. It is one of our favorite times of year to fly, and it is when Frank U. came out to Linden Airport for a day tour with Azzurra City Tours.
Frank arrived the way most of our guests do: a little curious about what a small airplane flight actually feels like, and unsure whether the view could really live up to the idea of it. By the time the wheels were back on the ground in New Jersey, he had his answer. He left us a five-star review in January 2025, and it said what we hope every guest walks away feeling.
Two things stand out in that note, and we think they belong together. The flight, yes — but also the hospitality. A private airplane tour is not just a view. It is a morning spent with people who are glad you came, who take the time to explain what you are about to see, and who make the whole thing feel unhurried.
What the day looks like from the air
Our flights leave from Linden Airport in New Jersey, a small, friendly field just minutes from Manhattan. That proximity is part of the magic: there is no long transit, no crowded terminal. You meet your pilot, you walk out to the airplane, and shortly after takeoff the skyline is filling the window.
Because we fly a fixed-wing Piper Cherokee PA-28, the experience is calm and steady — high wings of conversation, low drama. Guests sit close to the glass with a clear line of sight down toward the harbor. The Statue of Liberty comes into view standing alone on her island, smaller than you expect and somehow more moving for it. Beyond her, the towers of Lower Manhattan rise in tight formation, and the island stretches north in that unmistakable grid, bridges stitched across the rivers on either side.
What guests tend to remember is not any single landmark but the sense of scale. From the ground, New York is vertical and overwhelming. From a few thousand feet, it becomes legible: an island, a harbor, a hundred neighborhoods laid out in relation to one another. People go quiet for a while, and then they start pointing.
Why day tours are worth the early start
Frank chose a day tour, and it is a choice we always endorse for a first flight. Daylight gives you color and depth — the green of the parks, the copper of the Statue of Liberty, the water changing shade as it moves. You can see detail: rooftops, ferries crossing, traffic threading the bridges. Evening flights have their own romance, but a day tour shows you the city as a place people live and work, not just a constellation of lights.
Come see it for yourself
Frank said he will definitely be back, and we hope he means it — repeat guests are our favorite kind. Whether you are marking an occasion, showing a visitor the city, or simply curious what New York looks like from above, the airplane is waiting a short drive from Manhattan.
Thank you, Frank, for flying with us and for taking the time to share your day. The window seat is yours whenever you want it again.
