Sunset Over Manhattan: Marta's Azzurra Skyline Flight

5-star review from Marta C. — Azzurra City Tours

There is a particular half hour over New York when the city cannot decide what it wants to be. The sun is still low enough to gild the west-facing glass of Midtown, but the streetlights have already begun to flicker on below. From the ground it passes almost unnoticed. From a small airplane a few thousand feet above the Hudson, it is the whole show.

In July 2021, Marta C. and her husband climbed into a Piper Cherokee at Linden Airport in New Jersey to see it for themselves. What they came back with was a five-star review and, judging by the warmth of it, a memory that will outlast most summer evenings.

An evening that started on the ground

Marta's story begins before the propeller ever turned. It begins with a bottle of red wine and a pilot who understood that a private flight is hospitality first and aviation second.

★★★★★
The experience with Renato and his Azzurra was great! My husband and I had such an amazing time. Renato is great, attentive and responsible with great attention to details. (He welcomed us with a nice bottle of red wine, grazie mille!) I truly recommend this experience if you would like to be AMAZED by NYC at sunset and night time! A big plus; Renato made us feel safe and comfortable since the beginning! We trusted him 100%. Grazie Renato! E' stato un piacere averti come pilota!

That phrase — since the beginning — is the one we keep coming back to. Confidence in a small airplane is not something a pilot can manufacture mid-flight. It is built on the ground: in the briefing, in the walkaround, in the unhurried way questions get answered before anyone straps in. Marta noticed it, and it shaped everything that followed.

What the sky looks like from here

Linden Airport sits only minutes from Manhattan, which means the transition from taxiway to skyline is startlingly quick. One moment you are rolling past hangars in New Jersey; the next, the Hudson opens up and the island arrives all at once.

The Statue of Liberty comes into view standing alone in the harbor, small and green and somehow more monumental from the air than from any ferry deck. Beyond her, the financial district stacks upward, then the long spine of Manhattan unrolls northward — the bridges laid across the East River like stitching, Central Park a dark rectangle pressed into the grid.

Flying a fixed-wing airplane rather than a helicopter changes the character of the experience. It is smoother, quieter in its own way, and the wide windows of a Cherokee give you a steady, unhurried frame to look through. There is time to point, to look twice, to simply sit with it.

Marta chose the moment when that view doubles. At sunset the towers burn orange and the water goes copper. Then, over the space of a few minutes, the light drains out and the city switches itself on. Millions of windows, headlights threading the avenues, the bridges outlined in white. Guests who see both halves of that transition rarely stop talking about it.

Grazie, Marta

Reviews like this one are the reason we do this. Not because of the stars, but because of the detail Marta chose to mention — the wine, the attentiveness, the trust. Those are the things a guest remembers when the photographs have been filed away.

If you have been curious about seeing New York from a private airplane, the sunset and night flights are where the city gives its most generous performance. Bring someone you like. Depart from Linden, cross the Hudson, and watch Manhattan light up beneath the wing.

E' stato un piacere, Marta.
