A dream that starts on the ground in New Jersey
Most people who fly with us have imagined the view long before they ever buckle a seatbelt. They have pictured Manhattan from above — the grid of avenues, the rivers wrapping around the island, the Statue of Liberty small and green in the harbor. What they rarely picture is the quiet part beforehand: a small airport in New Jersey, minutes from the city, where a Piper Cherokee waits on the ramp and there is time to ask questions before the engine turns over.
That is where Santiago B.'s tour began, at Linden Airport, in July 2021. He left us a five-star review afterward, and what stands out about it is how much of it is about the feeling of the day rather than the sights alone.
In his own words
Santiago's line about being made to feel at home "from the go" is the part we take most to heart. A private flight is a small, personal thing. There are only a few seats, one pilot, and a long window beside you. Whether a guest has flown a hundred times or never left the ground in a light airplane, the first few minutes set the tone for everything that follows — which is why the conversation, the questions, and the briefing matter as much as the route.
Why sunset and night flights win people over
Santiago's recommendation is one we hear often from guests who have tried more than one departure time. In daylight, the skyline reads like a map: bridges, piers, the sharp edges of towers, the harbor traffic below. At sunset, the same view turns warm and layered, with the glass of Midtown and Lower Manhattan catching the last of the light and long shadows stretching east across the boroughs.
Then the city switches on. Windows light up floor by floor, avenues become rivers of white and red, and the Statue of Liberty stands lit in the middle of a dark harbor. From a fixed-wing airplane, the whole scene moves slowly past your window rather than flashing by — which is exactly what makes it worth the trip for people who want to look, not just glance.
What guests see from the air
Flights out of Linden put you within minutes of the city. Depending on the route and the day's conditions, guests take in the Manhattan skyline from the water, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, the bridges linking the boroughs, and the wide sweep of New York Harbor opening toward the ocean. It is the kind of perspective that reorganizes a city you thought you knew.
An open invitation
Santiago closed his review by saying he could not wait to go again, and repeat guests are some of our favorite people to fly — they arrive already knowing where to look and spend the whole flight noticing new things.
If seeing New York City from the air has been sitting on your list for years, consider a sunset or night departure, the way Santiago suggests. Send us a message with your questions; we are happy to talk through timing, seating, and what the light tends to do at that hour before you commit to a date.
