A Student Pilot From France Flies Over the NYC Skyline

5-star review from Karim S. — Azzurra City Tours

There is a particular kind of excitement that comes from flying somewhere you have only ever seen in photographs. Multiply that by the experience of being a student pilot — someone who already knows the feel of a yoke, the rhythm of a radio call, the quiet focus of a checklist — and a flight over New York City becomes something closer to a milestone than a sightseeing trip.

That was the case for Karim S., who visited us in October 2026. He came to Linden Airport in New Jersey from France, where he is working through his own flight training, and he left with a 5-star review and, we suspect, a story he will be telling at the flying club for years.

Flying Over New York With the Chief Pilot

For a student pilot, sharing a cockpit is never just about the view. It is about watching how someone with thousands of hours handles the airplane, how they manage the airspace, how they talk to controllers in a corner of the sky as busy as this one. Karim flew with our chief pilot, and his review captured the feeling simply:

We hear versions of this from pilots and non-pilots alike, but there is something especially rewarding about flying a guest who understands exactly what they are looking at — not only the skyline, but the procedures, the traffic, the sequencing that makes a flight like this possible. Karim asked the kinds of questions that make an hour go quickly.

What You See From the Cherokee

Our tours fly in a Piper Cherokee PA-28, a fixed-wing airplane with high wings of visibility through broad side windows and a stable, unhurried ride. We depart from Linden Airport, which sits only minutes from Manhattan — close enough that the skyline appears almost as soon as you turn toward the city.

From there, the route unfolds the way New York deserves to be seen. The Statue of Liberty stands on her island below, small and green and unmistakable, with the harbor opening around her. The Manhattan skyline rises in layers: the towers of the Financial District first, then Midtown stacked behind them, the Empire State Building and the spire of One World Trade marking the city's two great centers of gravity.

You see the bridges stitching the boroughs together, the rectangle of Central Park pressed into the grid, the rivers carrying ferries and barges in slow white lines. On clear days the view stretches well past the city itself. It is a perspective that no observation deck can offer, because from the air the city finally looks like what it is — an island, surrounded by water, built upward because there was nowhere else to go.

For Pilots and First-Timers Alike

Guests sometimes assume these flights are meant for aviation people. They are not, though aviation people tend to love them. What Karim experienced — the mix of a familiar cockpit and an unfamiliar skyline — is one version of the day. Another is the guest who has never been in a small airplane before and spends the first few minutes gripping the seat, then the rest of the flight unable to stop smiling.

Both versions end the same way: a quiet descent back toward New Jersey, the skyline shrinking in the window, and that slightly dazed feeling of having seen something properly.
