Great Puns and Great Views: A NYC Skyline Flight Story

5-star review from _Aha_ — Azzurra City Tours

Some flights are remembered for the view. Others are remembered for the company. Every so often, a guest gets both — and that is more or less what happened on an October 2024 afternoon when _aha_ climbed into the right seat of our Piper Cherokee at Linden Airport in New Jersey for a private tour of the New York City skyline.

It is a short drive from Manhattan to Linden, and an even shorter flight back toward it. That is part of what makes the departure feel so unhurried. There is a pre-flight walkaround, a briefing, a headset check, the small ceremony of a run-up at the end of the runway — and then the ground drops away and the skyline arranges itself in the windscreen like something staged.

What aha wrote

The review was brief, and all the better for it:

★★★★★
Amazingly professional, safe and competent Pilot- and loads of great puns in the Cockpit. :) 100% recommend, a flight experience you will not forget anytime soon.

We are quietly proud of the first half of that sentence, because professionalism and safety are the parts of this job that never get a day off. Checklists, weather briefings, fuel planning, airspace coordination with controllers who are managing some of the busiest sky in the world — all of it happens before a single photo is taken. It is invisible work, and it is supposed to be. When a guest steps out of the airplane and describes the flight as safe and competent, that means the invisible work held.

The second half of aha's sentence is the human part. A small airplane cockpit is an intimate space. Two people, two headsets, a shared intercom and a view that keeps improving. Silence would be a waste of that. So yes — there are puns. There are usually more puns than any reasonable person expects at altitude. Our pilots have a running theory that a well-timed groan is a good sign a guest has relaxed enough to actually enjoy themselves.

What you see from the right seat

The route out of Linden puts Manhattan on your side of the airplane almost immediately. From a fixed-wing aircraft you get something a helicopter tour rarely offers: a steady, gliding perspective, wide windows, and the sense that the city is turning slowly beneath you rather than rushing past.

The Statue of Liberty comes up out of the harbor, small and green and improbably famous, with Ellis Island just beyond her. Then the financial district stacks up — One World Trade rising above the clustered towers of Lower Manhattan — and the island narrows into the long grid of Midtown, where the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building are suddenly landmarks you are looking at rather than looking up at. The bridges of the East River stitch Brooklyn to Manhattan. Central Park appears as a clean green rectangle punched into the density, and on a clear day you can trace the Hudson north until the city loosens its grip.

Guests often go quiet somewhere over the harbor. Then the questions start. What is that building? How high are we? Can we go around again? It is, as aha put it, an experience you will not forget anytime soon.
