A late train, a patient crew, and a night to remember
Some trips begin exactly on schedule. Others begin with a wrong platform, a slow train, and a growing worry that the whole evening might slip away. Uljana L. arrived at Linden Airport in October 2024 later than planned — and found the owner and her pilot still waiting, unhurried, ready to go flying.
What happened next she described as one of the best experiences of her life.
From nervous to laughing together
Nerves are part of the story for a lot of first-time guests, and Uljana was honest about hers. Small airplanes are unfamiliar. The sound is different. The ground looks close in a way it never does from an airliner window. What she noticed was that the calm came from the people around her rather than from any pep talk — a friendly welcome, straightforward answers, and a crew that stayed relaxed while everyone got settled.
By the time the technical briefing was finished — how the seatbelts and headsets work, what to expect once the engine starts, how the tour will unfold — the mood had shifted entirely. As Uljana put it, they were all laughing together.
Forty minutes with the city below
Our flights leave from Linden Airport in New Jersey, only minutes of flying time from Manhattan, which means the sightseeing starts almost as soon as the wheels leave the runway. The Piper Cherokee PA-28 is a fixed-wing airplane with a high-set window line and a steady, level ride — the kind of aircraft that lets you simply look out and take it all in.
Guests trace the Hudson, pass the Statue of Liberty standing lit against the dark water, and watch the towers of Lower Manhattan and Midtown rise up beside them. At night the effect Uljana described is exactly right: glittering. Bridges become strings of light, avenues turn into long bright lines running the length of the island, and the whole grid of the city glows underneath the wing.
Forty minutes sounds brief until you are up there. It is long enough to stop fumbling with your camera, to settle into your seat, and to actually enjoy the view instead of rushing it. Uljana singled that out — the time to really enjoy New York, with the crew keeping close attention on safety and on how everyone aboard was doing.
Photos to bring home
She also mentioned the photos, and we hear that often. Shooting through a window at night is tricky, and having images that hold up afterward turns a memory into something you can show people back home. Uljana called them a souvenir worth having.
Come see it for yourself
Whether you are visiting New York for the first time or have lived nearby for years, seeing the skyline from a small airplane rewrites your sense of the place. If you are a little nervous, that is normal — most of our guests are, right up until the briefing. Then the engine starts, the city appears, and, in Uljana's words, we hope you enjoy your ride as much as she did.
