Flying in a Fixed-Wing Airplane
Our tours are flown in a Piper Cherokee PA-28, a four-seat, fixed-wing airplane with a high-visibility cabin and a wing set low beneath the windows. That last detail matters more than most people expect. With the wing below you, the sightlines out and down are open and uninterrupted, which is exactly what you want when the ground below is one of the most photographed cities on earth.
A fixed-wing flight is also noticeably smoother and quieter than many first-time flyers anticipate. Guests often tell us they expected to feel nervous and instead found themselves relaxed within the first few minutes, camera up, narrating landmarks to whoever came along with them.
What You See From Up There
The Statue of Liberty is usually the first moment that draws a gasp. Seen from the harbor she is impressive; seen from the air, with Ellis Island and the wide green sweep of New York Bay around her, she becomes something else entirely. From there the route opens onto the full length of the Manhattan skyline, the financial district's glass towers stacked against the older masonry of Lower Manhattan, the bridges stitching Brooklyn to the island, and the long spine of the city running north toward Midtown and the park beyond.
On a clear November afternoon like Dariana's, the details sharpen. Shadows lengthen across the avenues. Windows begin to catch the low sun. The city stops being a place you move through and becomes a place you can finally see all at once.
