When T A. was thinking about what to give her boyfriend for Christmas, she skipped the sweaters and the gadgets entirely. Meeting the Airplane at Linden
Our flights leave from Linden Airport in New Jersey, a small, friendly field just minutes from Manhattan. There is no terminal shuffle, no security line, no waiting around. For T A.'s boyfriend, the day also included time at the controls with Rafa, one of the instructors guests mention most often. Rafa has a way of making a first-time flyer feel less like a passenger and more like part of the crew, explaining what each instrument is doing and why, then handing over the airplane when the moment feels right.
That line about the childhood neighborhood is the one that stays with us. T A. gave a gift with two layers: the airplane, and the city underneath it. Learning to hold a heading is thrilling on its own. Doing it while the streets you grew up on slide past the window is something else entirely.
What the City Looks Like From Up There
