There is a particular kind of guest we love flying: the one who already knows New York. The person who can name the neighborhoods, who has crossed the bridges a thousand times, who has walked the avenues in every season. They arrive at Linden Airport certain the city holds no more surprises for them. And then the wheels leave the runway.
Sue L. was one of those guests. She joined us on a bright April afternoon in 2024, climbing into our Piper Cherokee PA-28 for a private flight along the Manhattan skyline. Afterward, she left a five-star review that captured exactly what we hope every guest feels.
It Starts on the Ground
Sue mentioned something we care about deeply: the walkaround before the flight. Every tour begins with time beside the airplane, not rushing past it. Guests get to see the aircraft up close, ask about the wings and the propeller and the instruments, and understand a little about how the whole thing works before they ever buckle in.
Part of that is comfort. A private airplane is a small, intimate space, and knowing what you are stepping into makes the whole experience calmer. But part of it is simply that airplanes are interesting. Most people have only ever seen them from a jet bridge. Standing next to a Cherokee on the ramp at Linden, close enough to touch the wing, is a different feeling entirely.
The Perspective That Changes Everything
Linden Airport sits in New Jersey, only minutes of flying time from Manhattan, which means the skyline arrives quickly. One moment you are climbing out over the flatlands, and the next the towers are stacked up in front of the windshield, sharp and close and unmistakable.
Because we fly a fixed-wing airplane with a high cruise and big windows, guests get a steady, quiet look at the whole picture. The Statue of Liberty standing alone in the harbor. The Financial District crowded to the water's edge. The rivers wrapping the island, the bridges stitched across them, Central Park cut out of the grid like a green rectangle someone forgot to build on.
That is what Sue meant by a perspective that is one of a kind. From the ground, New York is a series of corridors and glimpses. From a few thousand feet, it becomes a single object with a shape you can finally take in all at once. Lifelong New Yorkers are often the most surprised of all, because they have the map in their heads already and suddenly they can see the whole thing laid out at once.
Clear Skies and a Return Trip
Sue got lucky with the weather, and clear April light over the harbor is hard to beat. She also left with a plan, which is something we hear often: she is already thinking about coming back after dark.
Night flights are their own experience. The same skyline, the same landmarks, but rendered entirely in light. The Empire State Building glowing above the grid, the bridges outlined in strings of bulbs, the harbor black and quiet below. Guests who have seen both usually say they are two different cities.
Come See It Yourself
Whether you are visiting New York for the first time or have lived here your whole life, a private flight along the skyline tends to rearrange how you see the place. Our flights depart from Linden Airport in New Jersey, just a short drive from the city, and every tour is private — just you, your group, and your pilot.
Thank you, Sue, for the kind words and for trusting us with your first look at New York from above. We will keep the porch light on for that night flight.
