Risa's Bird's-Eye View of NYC From a Piper Cherokee

There is a particular kind of quiet that settles over people the first time they see Manhattan from the air. The island stops being a place you walk through and becomes a shape — a long spine of towers pressed between two rivers, with the harbor opening wide to the south. That was the view waiting for Risa S. when she joined us at Linden Airport in November 2024 for a private flight over New York City in our Piper Cherokee PA-28.

It starts on the ground

Every Azzurra City Tours flight begins with a conversation, not a boarding call. Because our tours are private, there is no queue, no crowd, and no rushing anyone through a script. Ash walks each group through what the flight will look like, what they will see, how the airplane works, and what to expect once the wheels leave the runway. For a lot of guests, it is the first time anyone has explained a flight to them instead of simply announcing it.

Risa noticed that difference, and it shaped her whole day:

★★★★★
Ash was an amazing tour operator! He gave us a well informed debrief and made the entire flight experience memorable from start to finish! His pilot, Destin, was absolutely informative and did such a great job of flying us safely along with showing us the NYC attractions from the Birds Eye POV.

From start to finish

Those four words — start to finish — are the part of Risa's review we appreciate most. A skyline flight is short by the clock, but the experience is longer than the time in the air. It includes the walk out to the airplane, the pre-flight checks, the headsets, the first climb, and the moment the conversation in the cabin dies down because everyone is looking at the same thing at the same time.

In the air, the pilot does double duty: flying the airplane safely and narrating the city as it unfolds. Guests hear where they are, what they are looking at, and what is coming up next on the other side of the window. That combination — calm at the controls, generous with the commentary — is exactly what Risa described in her note about Destin.

What you see up there

Linden Airport sits in New Jersey, only minutes of flying time from Manhattan, which means the payoff comes quickly. The harbor arrives first, with the Statue of Liberty standing green against the water and looking, from above, smaller and somehow more remarkable than she does from a ferry deck.

Then the skyline: Lower Manhattan's cluster of glass, the long grid running north, Midtown's towers grouped like a second mountain range, the rivers and bridges stitching the boroughs together. Because our airplane is a fixed-wing Piper Cherokee with a window seat for everyone aboard, there is time to actually look — not to snatch a photo and move on, but to trace the streets and find the buildings you recognize.

Come see it for yourself

Guests come to us for anniversaries, birthdays, proposals, first-time visits, and sometimes for no reason at all beyond curiosity about what their city looks like from above. Whatever brings you out to Linden, you will get the same thing Risa did: a private airplane, a thorough briefing, a pilot happy to point things out, and a view of New York that stays with you long after you land.

Thank you, Risa, for flying with us and for taking the time to share your experience.
