A Father's Day Discovery Flight Over NYC: Matt W.'s Story

5-star review from Matt W. — Azzurra City Tours

A Gift That Comes With a Logbook Entry

Some Father's Day gifts sit on a shelf. Others end up as a story your dad tells for years. When Matt W. started looking for something his father would actually remember, he landed on an idea that felt a little bolder than the usual card and dinner reservation: a pilot lesson, flown out of Linden Airport in New Jersey, minutes from Manhattan.

In June 2025, Matt and his dad arrived at the small general-aviation field where our Piper Cherokee PA-28 waits on the ramp. There's no terminal shuffle here, no security lines, no boarding groups. Just a hangar, a runway, and an airplane you walk up to, touch, and eventually fly.

The Morning of the Flight

What Matt described afterward had less to do with altitude and more to do with atmosphere. A discovery lesson can be intimidating if the people running it treat it like a formality. It becomes something else entirely when the instructor takes the time to explain the walkaround, hand over the controls, and let a first-timer feel the airplane respond.

★★★★★
I booked a pilot lesson for my dad as a Father's Day gift, and the whole experience exceeded our expectations. Ash and the instructor pilot, Colby, were both fantastic—friendly, approachable. The atmosphere was relaxed, which made the day even more special. Ash went out of his way to ensure everything went smoothly and that we had a memorable time. I'd absolutely recommend Azzurra to anyone looking for a fun and authentic piloting experience!

That word — authentic — is the one we keep coming back to. Matt didn't book a simulator ride or a scripted attraction. He booked time in a real airplane with a real instructor, and his dad came home with the memory of having actually flown it.

What the View Looks Like From a Cherokee

Linden sits in a quietly perfect spot. Lift off, turn toward the northeast, and the New York City skyline assembles itself in the windscreen — not on a screen, not through a scratched airliner porthole, but out a side window a few feet from your shoulder.

On a clear day the Statue of Liberty stands out below, small and unmistakable, with the harbor spread out around her. Lower Manhattan's towers come next, then the long spine of the island running north, the bridges stitched across the East River, the green rectangle of Central Park. The Verrazzano-Narrows, the New Jersey shoreline, the Hudson threading between two states. Passengers usually go quiet for a minute or two. Then the questions start.

A Piper Cherokee is a low-wing, four-seat airplane, which means the view downward is clean and the ride is steady. It's also small enough that everyone aboard is part of the same conversation — pilot, student, and passengers all on the intercom together. That's a large part of why the day felt relaxed to Matt and his father. There's no separation between the front and the back.

An Invitation

Not everyone who comes to Linden wants a pilot lesson. Plenty of guests simply want the skyline, the harbor, and an hour they didn't expect to have. Both flights leave from the same ramp, in the same airplane, over the same city.

But if there's someone in your life who has mentioned, once or twice, that they always wondered what it would be like to fly — Matt's story is a decent argument for finding out. His dad got a Father's Day gift with a control yoke attached to it.

Come see the city the way pilots do. We'll be at Linden, engine warm, when you're ready.
