A Summer Afternoon Above the City
There is a particular quality to August light over New York. The haze softens the edges of Midtown, the rivers turn the color of pewter, and the harbor stretches out flat and bright toward the Verrazzano. It is the kind of afternoon that makes people who have lived here their whole lives stop on a corner and look up. In August 2021, Kubra Y. did the opposite — she looked down.
Kubra joined us for a private tour aboard our Piper Cherokee PA-28, a four-seat fixed-wing airplane that lifts off from Linden Airport in New Jersey, only minutes of flying time from Manhattan. It is a small, unhurried way to see a very large city. There is no crowd, no queue, no shared cabin with strangers. Just the guests who came together, the pilot, and the windows.
What She Said Afterward
Some reviews arrive full of adjectives. Kubra's arrived full of feeling, which is often the better measure of a flight:
"We'll do again" is the line that stays with us. People book a skyline flight expecting a one-time thing — a box checked, a photo taken. What often happens instead is that the city rearranges itself in their mind. The grid they walk every week becomes a shape they can hold. And then they want to see it again in a different season, a different light, with someone else in the back seat.
What the Route Looks Like
From Linden, the climb-out is quick and the payoff is almost immediate. The Manhattan skyline assembles itself off one wing — the financial district first, then the long spine of the island running north, the Empire State Building and One World Trade standing out clearly from everything around them. The Hudson opens up wide and blue-grey below.
Then there is the Statue of Liberty, which almost every guest names as their favorite moment. From the ground she is a distant green figure across the water. From the air she is a sculpture on a small green island, complete and surprisingly delicate, with the harbor traffic drawing white lines all around her. Guests reach for their phones and then, half the time, put them down again and simply watch.
Because the Cherokee is a high-visibility, fixed-wing aircraft flown by a single pilot with guests seated beside and behind, the experience is conversational. Our pilots point things out, answer questions, and — crucially — stay quiet when the view is doing the talking. That balance is something we work hard at.
Who These Flights Are For
Visitors on their first trip to New York. Locals marking an anniversary or a birthday. Photographers chasing golden hour. Families who want their kids to remember something other than a museum gift shop. Kubra's recommendation — "I would recommend for great tour in New York City" — is broad on purpose, and we think that is right. The skyline is not a niche interest. It belongs to everyone who looks at it.
Come See It From Up There
Linden Airport is an easy drive from Manhattan, Newark, and most of northern New Jersey, and the whole experience is built to feel private and unrushed from the moment you arrive at the ramp. If you have been thinking about it, August light is lovely, but so is a clear October morning and so is the blue hour in December when the whole island switches on.
Whenever you come, we hope you leave feeling the way Kubra did — already planning the next one.
