Bethany W. Takes the Controls Above the NYC Skyline

There is a particular kind of quiet that settles over Linden Airport in the morning. It is a small New Jersey field, unassuming and easy to miss from the highway, and yet it sits only minutes of flying time from one of the most photographed skylines on earth. Guests arrive here expecting a scenic ride. Many of them leave having done something they never quite planned on: flying the airplane themselves.

That was the case for Bethany W., who joined us in July 2026 for a private tour over New York City in our Piper Cherokee PA-28.

A Seat With a View, and a Yoke

A four-seat fixed-wing airplane is an intimate way to see a city. There is no crowd, no jostling for the window, no waiting your turn. It is you, your pilot, and a windscreen full of sky. And because the Cherokee has dual controls, the moment often comes when the pilot offers a gentle invitation: would you like to try?

Bethany said yes. Her review afterward was short and unfussy, the kind of thing someone writes when they are still slightly buzzing from the experience:

★★★★★
It was really cool to fly the plane and the sights were amazing, and the pilot was very nice.

Three things, and they are honestly the three things that matter most. The flying. The views. The person sitting beside you.

What the Sky Looks Like From Here

The route out of Linden puts Manhattan in front of you almost immediately. Newark Bay opens up, then the Kill Van Kull, and then the harbor widens and the city assembles itself piece by piece. The Statue of Liberty appears below, green and small and impossibly familiar, standing in the water exactly where every photograph promised she would be.

From there, the island unspools. The Financial District first, a tight cluster of glass with One World Trade Center standing above it. Then the long low stretch of downtown before Midtown rises again, the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building marking the skyline the way they have for nearly a century. Central Park is a green rectangle cut cleanly into the grid, and the rivers on either side hold the whole thing in place.

What surprises most guests is not the scale but the clarity. From a small airplane at the right altitude, you can see the shape of the city as a single object. The bridges make sense. The boroughs connect. Something you have walked through a hundred times suddenly reads like a map you can understand.

The Person Beside You

Bethany mentioned the pilot, and that is not a small detail. A private flight is a shared experience with one other person for its entire duration. Our pilots narrate when narration helps and stay quiet when the view is doing the talking. They point out the landmarks you were looking for and the ones you did not know to look for. And when a guest wants to take the controls, they make that feel like the most natural thing in the world rather than something to be nervous about.

That combination, competence and warmth, is what turns a sightseeing flight into a story people tell for years.

Come Fly the Skyline

Linden Airport is easy to reach, easy to park at, and refreshingly free of the terminal rituals most people associate with flying. You arrive, you meet your pilot, you walk out to the airplane. Not long after, the Statue of Liberty is off your wing.

Whether you want to simply watch the city go by or, like Bethany, put your hands on the yoke and steer for a while, the seat is yours. We would be glad to show you New York the way very few people ever get to see it.
